Digital Printing in layman’s words

Digital Printing in layman’s words

Digital printing is the printing of digital images on a material surface. In digital printing the printing is done directly to the output device and hence the “pre-press” process is eliminated. The digital printing can be done onto paper, fabrics, thin plastics, and vinyl.

The image and writing that have to be digitally printed can be made ready on a computer. What will be seen on the computer screen will be a little different from how the digital print will look finally. In digital printing CMYK, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are the primary colors of the toner to produce the digital print. On the computer monitor the RGB scheme, red, green, and blue are used to produce colored images. Hence the image on the computer and the image in the digitally printed surface can be a little different and the person can have a look at the printed copy and get it slightly modified as per their requirements.

Digital printing can be done at 300 dots per inch resolution. Human eye will be able to see only 300 dots per inch resolution. Higher resolution of the picture up to a maximum of 1,200 dots per second can be set and this might produce better quality printing using the printer. The digital printing process sees the image in four colors CMYK. More the information people are able to give to the software by setting higher resolution, more accurate will be the breaking down of the image.

After the material is ready on the computer and there is need to print it, no one is sure whether it has to be done using digital printing or offset printing. As a thumb rule, for jobs that require 1000 copies or less of the print it is best to go for digital printing. Offset printing requires the printing plates to be made and this will make the offset printing expensive. For jobs greater than 1000 copies, offset printing, with the making of the printing plates, is a convenient option and not so expensive.

Digital printing is convenient when there is requirement for a few copies of print and also when there is need for slightly different copies of the print. In digital printing there is no need for printing plates which is a common requirement for other forms of printing.

Images are digitally printed and can be finished using special media, ink, and laminates so that they can stand sunlight, humidity, and outdoor weather conditions. Special adhesives are also there in the market so that digital images can be attached to various surfaces.

Digital printing will not print till the edge of the page. If the picture on the computer is so designed that it goes beyond the page by quarter of an inch, then the digital printer will print till the edge of the page. This is called full bleed printing and here the image extends to the edge of the page. The software used to design the digital image that contains both text and image will allow designing using bleeds.
